Matson 50th

Longtime Kenosha County residents Richard and Grace Matson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Saturday.

Rich, raised near Blair, Wis., and the former Grace Henderson, who was raised near Viroqua, Wis., met in Silver Lake in 1966. During a visit with his brother Arland upon his return from Vietnam, Rich stopped at a local establishment and spotted a young lady. He said he asked the bartender if she was married. When the answer was “No,” Rich then said, “Well, I am going to marry her.” The bartender laughed and said, “Oh, really, well she is my daughter, Grace.” The couple married at Wilmot Methodist Church in Wilmot on April 8, 1967. “I guess that proves what Matson wants, Matson gets,” Rich added.

Rich graduated from Blair High School and then served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966. For 11 of those months, he was stationed in south Vietnam with the 504th Military Police Battalion. He worked as a machinist at Johnson Motors and Tri Clover before retiring. His hobbies include fishing, hunting, gardening and bowling. Grace, a Wilmot High School graduate, was a homemaker and worked at Jensen’s, Sunshine Restaurant and Stars and Stripes. She enjoys cooking, baking and her yellow labradors. One major bowling highlight for Rich was when he won the 2008 Kenosha News Super Senior title. Grace and her daughter Shelly also won first place in the Mother/Daughter Handicap Division in the Women’s City Tournament in 1993.

Carey 50th

John and Roxine Carey of Kenosha will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary with a small family gathering on Easter at The Fellowship Church, formerly Foursquare Church, where they have been members since 1984.

John and the former Roxine Wallner met at Peniel Tabernacle as children. The couple began dating in March 1964 and were married at Peniel Tabernacle on April 8, 1967.

Durkin 50th

Lifelong Kenosha County residents Jim and Anne Durkin are planning to take a trip to Hawaii to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary.

Jim and the former Anne Gerich were Central High School sweethearts. They were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Burlington on April 8, 1967. They are now members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kenosha.

Miles 50th

John and Sara Miles, originally from Gloucester, England, and Muncie, Ind., respectively, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary this month with a reception at First Presbyterian Church of Kenosha, where they are members.

John and the former Sara Wasson met in Brussels, Belgium, in language school on their way to becoming missionary teachers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. John was sent to the east side of Congo, Sara to the west, and they communicated by ham radio. The couple was married in a religious service on March 26, 1967, at Mbandaka Christian Church, Mbandaka, Democratic Republic of the Congo; and a civil service was performed at City Hall of Mbandaka on March 29, 1967.

Kuryanowicz 50th

In honor of their golden wedding anniversary, longtime Kenosha County residents Ron and Janet Kuryanowicz celebrated with trips to Mexico: to Playa del Carmen with their family last June and to Playa Maroma this month.

Ron and the former Janet Delany met while in the St. Joseph High School choir and were married at St. Mark Catholic Church in Kenosha on March 18, 1967.

Brickell 50th

Don and Marla Brickell will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Saturday with a family dinner at the HobNob Restaurant.

Don met Marla Whitefoot on a blind date while he was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Base. The couple married at Kenosha Christian Reformed Church, where they are lifelong members, on March 11, 1967.

Van Daalwyk 50th

Dean and Diana Van Daalwyk recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with an eastern Caribbean cruise. They plan to continue the celebration this summer with family in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Dean and the former Diana Spitzer met while in high school, at a dance held at the American Legion. They married at Friedens Lutheran Church on March 4, 1967.

Ware 50th

Thomas W. and Patricia P. Ware of Pleasant Prairie celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Friday with a family party at the Brat Stop.

Thom Ware and Pat Paradise met while bowling in Chicago in 1965. Pat’s team needed two more bowlers, and the league secretary knew of two men interested in joining and they were put on her team. The couple’s first date was to Thom’s parents’ 25th anniversary party. Thom and Pat were married on March 3, 1967, at City Hall in Chicago.

Rizzo 50th

Chuck and Brenda Rizzo of Kenosha celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Feb. 19 with a dinner for family and friends at the Italian American Club.

Chuck Rizzo met Brenda Gooch when each of them took a separate spring break vacation to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. They married the following year on Feb. 18, 1967, at Holy Rosary Parish, where they remain members. The Rizzos are lifelong Kenosha residents.

Porasik 50th

1

William and Nancy Porasik of Kenosha celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in January with a family dinner in Chicago at Mastro’s.

William and the former Nancy Sherwood met in downtown Racine, while “scooping the loop.” They were not aware at the time that they were both working at S.C. Johnson Wax. The couple married at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Racine on Jan. 7, 1967.

Dalpaos 65th

In honor of their 65th wedding anniversary, lifelong Kenosha residents Louis and Dorothy Dalpaos will celebrate with a family dinner.

Louis and the former Dorothy Santiloni met in the ninth grade at Washington Junior High School. The couple married at Holy Rosary Church, where they are still members, on Feb. 23, 1952.

Barthuly 70th

Walter and Patricia Barthuly, longtime Kenosha County residents, will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary with a private family dinner.

Walter and the former Patricia Lardinois met at a Halloween party in 1946 after he returned from serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. They became engaged that December, and were married two months later at Church of Peace in Fond du Lac on Feb, 18, 1947.

Ruffolo 70th

Lifelong Kenosha residents Ralph and Shirley Ruffolo will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary Saturday with a 4 p.m. Mass at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church followed by a family party at the Italian American Club.

Ralph Ruffolo and Shirley Kollmann met as students at Bradford High School and were married on Feb. 6, 1947, at the former St. George Catholic Church, now St. Elizabeth, where they are still members.

Smith 50th

Larry and Sandy Smith of New Munster celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Saturday. In honor of the event, they took a family trip to Maui, Hawaii, in June.

Larry and the former Sandy Gehring met as students at St. Alphonsus Grade School. They were married on Jan. 28, 1967, the week of a severe snowstorm that paralyzed the area.

Merkes 65th

Longtime Kenosha residents Al and Bea Merkes plan to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary with a Mass at Holy Rosary Church on Feb. 12 at 10:30 a.m.

Al and the former Bea Schoenfuss were married at St. Joseph’s Church in Stratford, Wis., on Jan. 24, 1952. They met when Al’s brother was dating Bea’s sister, a couple who also married.

Nelson 50th

Gary and Carol Nelson, lifetime and longtime residents of Kenosha, respectively, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Saturday with a party for family and friends at the Nelson family farm.

Gary Nelson and the former Carol Taff met at a Fourth of July picnic, during which he asked her to go for a ride on his motorcycle to feed his cattle at the farm. Carol said she hated motorcycles, but went with him anyway. They became a couple and were married in Palmyra, Wis., at Palmyra United Methodist Church on Jan. 20, 1967.

Kuffel 60th

Jim and Jeanne Kuffel of Kenosha celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family party at The Summit Restaurant in Racine on Thanksgiving Day.

Jim and the former Jeanne Gnifkowski met in high school and were married at Holy Angels Catholic Church, St. Cloud, Minn., on Nov. 22, 1956. They have been Kenosha County residents for 55 years.

Wohlgemuth 70th

Howard and Doris Wohlgemuth of Kenosha celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with a dinner party on Nov. 26 at Bartley House.

Howard and the former Doris Hengst met at Beachland Roller Rink in Racine. Howard was asked by a friend to set up a date for him with Doris, but instead he decided to ask Doris out himself and she agreed. They were married in a candlelit ceremony at Immanuel Methodist Church in Kenosha on Nov. 16, 1946.

Presterl 60th

Wayne and Dianne Presterl of Salem plan to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with a family dinner and then include a road trip and cruise in the spring.

Wayne Presterl and Dianne Braze met as students at Bradford High School and were married by the Rev. Earl Collins at First Congregational Church in Kenosha on Dec. 8, 1956.

Wilson 50th

Glen and Donna (Ziehr) Wilson of Kenosha plan to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary in the spring. The couple, who met while “scooping the loop,” were married by a justice of the peace in Waukegan, Ill., on Nov. 29, 1966.

Glen retired from AMC/Chrysler in 1990. Donna worked at Oliver’s Bakery, as a carrier adviser for the Kenosha News and as a lunch worker at Strange School. They are members of Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church. Donna also volunteers in the children’s area at the Southwest Library. They have been Kenosha County residents for the duration of their marriage.

Cima 50th

Tony and Marisa Cima of Kenosha celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a vow renewal at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church followed by a family dinner at the Italian American Club on Oct. 29.

Tony and Marisa Riva grew up in the same small town in Italy and were friends from a young age. Marisa moved to America with her family in 1958, but the two kept in touch and, during a return visit to Italy, Tony proposed. The couple married at S.S. Annunziata Church in Norma (LT), Italy, on Oct. 29, 1966, and began their life together in Kenosha the following year.
