Testimony was not needed Wednesday in the case against a Racine man charged for fleeing police and crashing into a car, killing a Pleasant Prairie man.

Jerry G. Holliman, 21, waived a preliminary hearing, which would have required testimony to show there was enough evidence to continue the case.

Typically, such hearings are waived in exchange for more time to consider a plea offer. But no deal was offered to Holliman.

His lawyer said Holliman was simply remorseful and found no benefit in forcing people to testify.

Arraignment is May 27.

If convicted, Holliman faces 40 years in prison for the April 25 incident, which killed Anibal Tellez.

According to a criminal complaint, the day before the crash, Holliman had been on an electronic monitor, which had kept him out of prison for a probation revocation in another case.

After authorities removed that bracelet, Holliman drank eight beers and two shots before he drove from his aunt’s home in Racine to his girlfriend’s house in Kenosha.

He reached his girlfriend’s block, but not before running from police and crashing into two cars.

The chase started in the 2700 block of 22nd Avenue. When Holliman refused to pull over, Kenosha County Sheriff’s Deputy Doris Carroll followed.

Carroll drove 70 mph to catch Holliman, but he continued to pull away. She was starting to lose sight of him when she saw a cloud of smoke ahead.

When she reached the 4800 block of 22nd Avenue, Carroll saw the Durango had crashed into a 1995 Chevrolet Beretta and a parked car.

Tellez was in the Beretta. He died at the scene.

Holliman was gone. Police later found him in his girlfriend’s nearby home, hiding under a sheet with his girlfriend.

Holliman said he ran from police because he was on probation, had been drinking, had no valid driver’s license and didn’t want to go to jail.

He is in jail now because he has not posted a $100,000 cash bond.
