A former Kenosha Unified high school teacher appeared in court in Kenosha County Thursday, charged with sexually assaulting a student seven years ago.

Douglas A. Richmond, 41, of Burlington, is charged with sexual assault of a student as a member of school staff in Kenosha County.

He allegedly had a sex as many as 20 times with Tremper High School student who was 17 when their relationship began during the 2009-10 school year. The former student has told investigators that the relationship continued after she graduated from high school, and that the last time she saw him was in 2012 or 2013.

Although the investigation appears to have begun with Kenosha Police, Richmond was initially charged in Racine County because he allegedly had sex with the teen at least once at his mother’s home in Burlington.

A second charge was added in Racine after a second former student came forward and said she had a sex with Richmond when he was a teacher at Indian Trail High School. The second former student said she had sex with Richmond at least twice, one at his home in Burlington.

Richmond’s attorney Patrick Cafferty said in court Thursday that his client has not been a teacher since 2011 and said he does not work with youth now.

“He has no record whatsoever,” Cafferty said.

Richmond’s bond in the Kenosha County charge was set at $2,500. His bond in Racine County was set at $3,000.
