There’s no time better than Valentine’s Day to work on healthy hearts.

Just ask the students at Prairie Lane Elementary School where Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart got into full swing Monday.

All grade levels are participating during gym class every day this week to benefit the American Heart Association.

The school’s gym is ringed with banners dating back to 1997-98 showing the school’s annual participation in the program.

Physical education teacher Anne Tiffe has overseen the event for the past 15 years at Prairie Lane, but she’s been a participating instructor since the program began in the 1980s.

“I think it’s great,” she said. “Students learn about the heart and to be good to your heart. I make it fun and educational.”

Students also learn about good nutrition, she said.

Last year’s event raised $13,500 was raised for the Heart Association, and incentive funds provided the school with new gym equipment.
