Carthage’s Madeja named All-American
Carthage’s Michelle Madeja was named first-team Divison III All-America by the American Volleyball Coaches Association this week.
Teammate Katie Lundgren was named to the second-team while Carthage’s Rachel Swoboda earned honorable mention.
Madeja, a sophomore outside hitter, posted a .214 attack percentage and 3.73 kills per set for the nationally-ranked Reds. Madeja was also a first-team All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin selection.
Madeja joins Swoboda and Kelly Bauer as Carthage first-team All-Americans. Swoboda earned the honor last year while Bauer was Carthage’s first All-American in 2007.
Lundgren, a senior libero, is making her second consecutive appearance on the second team. She averaged 5.95 digs per set. She was also a first-team All-CCIW choice and the league’s Player of the Year.
Swoboda, a junior right-side player, hit ..244 with 2.12 kills and 0.88 blocks per set. A first-team All-American a year ago, Swoboda was an All-CCIW first-team choice for the second year in a row.
Carthage went 33-6 and was ranked eighth in the final AVCA Division III poll. The Reds advanced to the Midwest Region championship match before bowing to host Washington (Mo.).
UW-P soccer honorees
UW-Parkside soccer players Meredith Novak and Niklas Boedts were named first-team All-Midwest Region, the school, the school announced Wednesday.
Parkside’s Shannon Becker was named to the second team
Novak, a senior midfielder, led Parkside with 12 assists.The Batavia, Ill., native also logged eight goals, including a game-winner.
Boedts, a sophomore midfielder from Germany, helped the Rangers go 13-5-2.
Boedts led Parkside with 26 points on the strength of a team-leading 10 goals (three game-winners) and six assists
Becker, a sophomore from DePere, paced the Rangers with 29 points.
The region awards, sponsored by Daktronics, are voted upon by the Sports Information Directors in the Midwest.
Novak and Boedts, as a first team member, will be on the All-America ballot which will be voted on by Division II SIDs throughout the country. The All-America teams will be revealed Dec. 2.
