UW-P wrestling squad returns nationally-ranked talent
Here is a quick look at the 2009-10 UW-Parkside wrestling team, which was ranked No. 12 in the preseason NCAA Division II top-20 poll:

Last year: The Rangers placed 12th at the NCAA Division II Championships and finished with a 9-5 dual meet record. All five losses were to top-10 teams in either NCAA Division II or III. The Rangers also won the 28-team Wheaton College Tournament and finished runner-up in the 18-team Midwest Classic.
Returning national qualifiers from 2008-09: Junior Cody Zimmerman (125, ranked No. 6 nationally, led all college wrestlers with 46 wins); senior Craig Becker (149, finished 33-2 and placed fourth at nationals, ranked No. 2 nationally); sophomore Luke Rynish (174, set UW-P freshman record with 42 wins, ranked No. 7 nationally); senior Luke Haag (184, compiled a 93-51 record over last three seasons, ranked No. 4 nationally).
Other prospects: 125—Brandon Kircher, Sr.; Martino Balsiger, redshirt Fr.; 133—Matt Kiel, Fr.; 141—Mike Migawa, So.; Arik Yde, redshirt Fr., Dave Edwards, Fr.; 157—Dillon Bera, redshirt Fr.; 165—Matt Gille, reshirt Fr.; Ryan Katona, So.; Codi Ness, Fr.; 174—Ryan Woods, Jr.; Vince Depp, redshirt So.; Adam Avalos, redshirt Fr.; 184—Curtis Hines, Jr.; Jared Price, redshirt Fr.; Tyler Lemke, Fr.; 197—Jon Treml, Jr.; 285—James Malechek, redshirt Fr.; Chris Narel, Fr.; Charlie Mitchell, Fr.
So far: Nine of the Rangers’ 14 wrestlers earned top-four finishes at Saturday’s season-opening UW-Stevens Point Open. Zimmerman and Bera won individual titles at 125 and 149 pounds and went a combined 9-0. Magawa (141), Rynish (174) and Treml (197) each went 3-1 and took second in their respective weight classes. Gille (165), Woods (174) and Haag (184) placed third and Yde (141) finished fourth.
Up next: The Rangers will send split squads to open meets Saturday at Concordia University in Mequon and at Nebraska-Omaha.
